Blackboard Announces Leading Library Software Vendors Join the Blackboard Developer Network

6/25/2003 , Toronto, Canada - Today at the American Library Association’s annual conference Blackboard Inc., a leading enterprise software company for e-Education, announced that nine leading software vendors that serve the library market have joined the Blackboard Developer’s Network. In joining the Blackboard Developer’s Network, these vendors have exhibited a commitment to interoperability between key library resources and the Blackboard e-Education Suite™. In turn, Blackboard intends to work closely with these vendors and common clients to define and execute a vision for maintaining and improving the value of the library's resources within the online teaching and learning environment.

Increasingly, the resources that a school, college or university library manages are digital in nature. While once oriented towards the challenges of circulation and catalog management, library technologies now address the challenge of direct instructional and research patron services. Library information systems now enable Web-based access to a wide variety of resources while helping librarians manage quickly growing digital collections.

Achieving integration of the critical e-education technologies from the library and course management sides of the institution will enhance the position of the library and librarians in the course management environment, streamline the effective use of library resources, and increase access to valuable instructional resources and critical research materials.

“Breaking down the boundaries between library information and course management systems will deliver meaningful, visible benefits to the education environment,” said Matthew Pittinsky, Chairman at Blackboard Inc. “In working with leading library technology vendors, Blackboard will make the vision of interoperability between the Blackboard platform and library information systems a reality.”
