LONDON — Fabless semiconductor company WiDeFi Inc. (Melbourne, Fla.) has selected Atmel Corp. (San Jose, Calif.) as foundry partner for a family of 802.11 wireless LAN "repeater" chipsets implemented in silicon germanium, the company said.
WiDeFi said Atmel's ability to make silicon germanium (SiGe) bipolar complementary metal oxide semiconductor (Bi-CMOS) circuits had been key to the company's decision, together with Atmel's collaborative approach to working with its customers throughout the design process. The first product to benefit from this partnership is WiDeFi's Xtender product range which WiDeFi claims can double the range of WLAN networks with twice the throughput and lower cost than the best competing solutions.

"Atmel offers a unique combination of benefits to WiDeFi that we couldn't find with any other foundry," said Jim Proctor, WiDeFi founder and chief executive officer, in a statement. "The company's rich experience and expertise in wireless LAN and cellular technologies, its leadership position in SiGe BiCMOS technologies, and its U.S.-based foundry services and design support ensure that we can provide our customers with the highest quality product while meeting their time-to-market demands," he added.

WiDeFi announced the closing of a Series A financing round of about $6.8 million dollars April 1, 2004.
