Unitrends Slashes Backup and Restore Times with New Data Protection Software Suite 2.0

New bare metal heterogeneous disk recovery saves IT managers
time and money; less downtime required

COLUMBIA, SC, -- February 15, 2005 — Unitrends Software Corporation  (www.unitrends.com), a pioneer in the development of business recovery products and services, today announced that it is providing users with greater reliability and more flexibility than any other data protection software on the market today with the introduction of version 2.0 of its data protection software suite (DPS).

By incorporating an exclusive advanced media management framework, Unitrends’ new generation of improved DPS (version 2.0) significantly reduces the time it takes to backup and restore data.  In addition, Unitrends’ DPS includes memory enhancements that allow administrators to scale the software to support multi-terabyte backups, while allowing for multiple concurrent database updates at a rate of between three and five times faster than with previous versions.

"The combination of Unitrends' software, integrated with its Data Protection Unit (DPU), has made our transition from tape to disk-to-disk data protection easier than we could have anticipated," said Greg Parks, technology director at Fortune Diversified Industries (OTC:  FDVI).  Parks said that backing up the company's data to tape routinely took more than a day; by using Unitrends' unified solution, he said that time has been slashed by almost three-fourths.  In addition, Parks noted that he can continue to use his existing tape backup gear to produce a copy of the data for offsite archival purposes.  "We needed a solution that is powerful, and easy to use.  For us, Unitrends proved to be a wise decision."  Parks added that he chose Unitrends after consulting with Hasler Consulting Engineers, a nationwide provider of full-service data storage solutions, and a Unitrends channel partner.

Unitrends’ industry-recognized leadership in bare metal functionality has been enhanced to enable companies, for the first time, to restore their data across different hardware formats.  For instance, information saved from a SCSI, SATA or IDE system may now be quickly restored to an IDE system, allowing IT administrators to manage a cheaper standby server solution, keeping their IT and disaster recovery costs to a minimum.  It also helps companies avoid unnecessary downtime when a crash occurs, because replacement drives of a specific format may not be immediately available.

Data protection represents a major concern in the dynamic small- to mid-sized business segment. The improvements in Unitrends’ data protection software are consistent with the company’s focus on providing powerful integrated and automated business recovery and data protection solutions for small and mid-sized businesses, permitting them to take advantage of the benefits of dedicated protection technology at a fraction of the cost of products and point solutions from other firms.

“Speed and powerful performance are critical elements in any data protection software, but it must be flexible as well,” said Steve Schwartz, Unitrends’ Founder and Chief Technology Officer.  “Our approach in the new Version 2.0 of DPS solves this challenge; giving administrators more options and moving Unitrends another step closer to providing full management of multiple types of media across multiple locations.  It also assures administrators that their data is securely protected, and is rapidly available when they need it most.  Its ability to permit restoration heterogeneously lets small- and mid-sized businesses implement a continuity solution without being exposed to BIOS revision or SCSI and/or IDE card revisions.”

Unitrends’ Version 2.0 of its data protection software is available immediately, and has been integrated into the company’s line of Data Protection Units (DPUs™), which can provide companies with up to 100 terabytes of secure storage, while taking up a minimum of space.  The DPS software is also available independently, with current installations upgradeable to Version 2.0 from two releases back.
