BIRMINGHAM, AL - (December 3, 2003) - Emageon, a leading provider of intelligent visual medical systems, announced today an agreement with BJC HealthCare (BJC), a large integrated delivery network of 13 hospitals headquartered in St. Louis Missouri, to acquire its medical image visualization, content management and workflow integration products and services. The enterprise application will also integrate intelligent visualization tools into BJC’s existing EMR product, Clinical Desktop. Implementation will begin with conversion from a film environment to digital at Missouri Baptist Medical Center, a large facility in west St. Louis County with 489 beds and four medical office buildings. Four more hospitals are budgeted to roll out Emageon solution components in 2004. Other facilities may be added at BJC’s option.

"When we began our search for a medical imaging infrastructure vendor, it was very important that we choose one that offered high flexibility and could be efficiently integrated with our existing systems," said David Weiss, BJC’s Vice President and Chief Information Officer. "BJC has a large and sophisticated IS group; selecting a long-term partner that complemented our ongoing efforts to guarantee maximum uptime and provide the greatest benefit to our patients and physicians was critical. We found these qualities in Emageon."

"Having been selected by BJC, one of the nation’s elite healthcare enterprises, to provide them with our new Intelligent Visual Medical System (IVMS) is a great honor," said Milton Silva-Craig, Emageon’s Chief Operating Officer. "BJC has long distinguished itself in the market by deftly integrating leading edge Radiology research and teaching, with the delivery of high-value, community-based healthcare services. In this comprehensive partnership, BJC will deploy Emageon’s IVMS across several hospital sites to manage medical image visualization, content and workflow. It will integrate Emageon’s intelligent visualization tools into BJC's Clinical Desktop EMR application in addition to deployment throughout Missouri Baptist Medical Center. BJC will also utilize Emageon’s intellectual property in a collaborative research agreement with the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital. This opportunity will provide BJC the necessary platform to increase enterprise-wide image value, while additionally raising the technology bar with respect to the management of visual medical content across the enterprise."
